It was originally a watchtower from the Carolingian era. Before acquiring its current name, it was known as San Joan Frèis and later San Joan del Frigidis. It became a bell tower, and a nave was subsequently added to accommodate the congregation. During the Albigensian Crusade, its cemetery served as a burial ground for Cathars. A unique feature of the site is that it also hosted "Desert" assemblies during the Wars of Religion.
While on the road, we recommend a brief detour to the charming, "forgotten" hamlet of Camalières.
